The Spectator is hiring: US online editor (NYC or DC-based)

Join The Spectator’s expanding team as an online editor and work with the best journalists, authors, critics and cartoonists since 1828. 

As an online editor, you will help manage The Spectator’s website in the United States, reporting on the major political stories of the day. You will work closely with the US editor and deputy US editor to cover the Trump administration, Congress and political events across the country, including gathering exclusive content and breaking stories of your own. 

The Spectator is the world’s oldest weekly magazine, and there’s never been a better time to join us. This role is full-time and is based in either our Washington, DC or New York offices.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least two years’ experience working at a newspaper, magazine or online media outlet
  • Experience working in breaking news
  • Experience covering the US news cycle
  • Excellent commissioning and editing skills
  • Experience in promoting articles on social media
  • Willingness to be flexible and responsive to fast-moving events
  • An understanding of The Spectator’s brand and style

The ideal candidate will be expected to:

  • Independently commission, edit, post and promote new articles for The Spectator’s websites
  • Edit in US and UK English
  • Brainstorm ideas and angles on news stories and make judgments about what stories to prioritize and cover
  • Recruit new authors and contributors to The Spectator
  • Run the US website in the absence of the managing editor or other senior staff
  • Work with the US team to provide rolling analysis on the websites, from day into evening
  • Work flexibly and out of hours

Salary dependent on experience.
