‘I NEVER told John Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into Democrats, including the Bidens,’ the president tweeted in the early hours of this morning. ‘In fact, he never complained about this at the time of his very public termination. If John Bolton said this, it was only to sell a book.’
For sure, Cockburn is a touch suspicious about the timing of the New York Times’s Bolton bombshell last night, despite the former national security adviser’s fervent denial that he’d coordinated with the paper. But perhaps more interesting is the president’s put-down that Bolton only claimed aid to Ukraine was predicated on investigations into the Bidens was ‘only to sell a book’.
As Cockburn has mentioned before, the president himself isn’t much of a book reader. That doesn’t keep him from his real literary passion though: publicizing them. Shouldn’t Bolton have known that the only respectable way to sell a book is to get Trump to tweet about it?
