It has been a furious week in Trumpland after White House officials accidentally added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to a highly sensitive group chat on Signal about planned air strikes in Yemen. Initially, the administration went on the offensive, with Defense Secretary Pete Hesketh calling Goldberg a “guy that peddles in garbage.” But now, 24 hours on, Trump’s National Security Advisor Mike Waltz has held his hands up for “Signalgate.”

Speaking to Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, Waltz accepted responsibility for making the Signal group – while, er, continuing to deflect blame. “It’s embarrassing, yes. We’re going to get to the bottom of it,” Waltz said, adding that he was consulting with Elon Musk: “We’ve got the best technical minds looking at how this happened.” Asked by his host, “What staffer is responsible?” for adding Goldberg to the Signal group, Waltz replied: “A staffer wasn’t responsible. I take full responsibility. I built the group. My job is to make sure everything is coordinated.” And that sure is going swimmingly…

When the Fox host then asked how Goldberg’s number ended up in the group, Waltz replied:

Have you ever had somebody’s contact that shows their name and then you have somebody else’s number there?… Of course I didn’t see this loser in the group. It looked like someone else. Whether he did it deliberately or it happened in some other technical mean is something we’re trying to figure out.

Curiously enough, Waltz did not offer any evidence for how Goldberg could have “deliberately” ended up in the group. Quelle surprise.
